“You’ve once again hit the target on issues that we are dealing with daily and are of such concern to our families.”

Newsletters are the most effective way to maintain regular contact with your students and their families, but time to research and write newsletter articles is hard to find in the educational consultant’s busy day. With an individually customized newsletter from The College Advisor, you can inform and educate your clients while promoting your independent educational consulting practice.

The College Advisor newsletter is written especially for the clients and prospective families of independent educational consultants. The newsletter carries no outside advertisements and is free of regional, cultural, or collegiate biases. Each newsletter is customized for individual subscribers with their own corporate information. Subscribers also may choose their own newsletter masthead, incorporating a photo or corporate logo and corporate colors if they wish. The newsletter arrives as a pdf and can be easily attached to an email for distribution or may be printed for mailing and marketing.  The newsletter can also be incorporated into a mailchimp or constant contact campaign.

Issued ten times per year, the newsletter has a recurring format. Each issue features:

  1. A two-month Timeline of suggested tasks and important dates
  2. A full-page Career or Major Focus that spotlights a different occupation/major each month.
  3. Money Matters deals with financing an education. Articles feature such subjects as 529 plans, applying for financial aid, scholarship searches, completing the FAFSA, and negotiating the best financial aid package.

Additional articles address time-related issues. Topics featured include testing and test preparation, college selections, interview techniques, college visits, essay writing, application issues, summer programs, internships, dealing with disabilities, athletes, resume writing, and college transition.

The newsletter is geared to all college-bound high school students and their parents. There is something to appeal to each of your readers in every issue. A year's subscription (10 issues) is priced at $475.  To start your subscription, click below. (IECA and HECA members receive an extra issue at no additional charge.)

What Can I Do with That Major?

Newsletter subscribers have frequently requested reprints of majors column from The College Advisor Newsletter.  We’ve selected a collection of 50 articles, each focusing on a specific college major and the career paths taken by students who choose that major.  Each article also includes a resource page for consultants with college program suggestions and summer opportunities so students can learn more about that major.  Consultants choose which university programs and/or summer opportunities to share.  Both the suggested college program section and the summer opportunities portion are designed to provide a starting point for consultants rather than provide all-inclusive lists.

College Unraveled

Become the go-to resource for college advice in your region by presenting College Unraveled workshops.  This complete workshop presentation system provides you with a time and cost effective way of reaching the parents of  9th through 11th grade students who live in your practice area.

Developed by Gail Grand (IECA member with over 28 years of college counseling experience) College Unraveled consists of four PowerPoint presentations, a full set of presenter notes, additional handouts, a printed parent manual ready for duplication, and a set of marketing ideas and materials.  Each hour and a half-long presentation focuses on a different aspect of the college process.  Your own expertise, experiences, and anecdotes bring the PowerPoints to life.  (for details about the presentation, please see the parents’ page – college unraveled)

Parents pay a fee for all four workshops given over the course of four weeks, so even with small numbers of participants, you will be well-compensated for your time.  Unlike stand-alone presentations at which you feel obligated to sell your services while providing minimal information, this series of workshops allows you to offer a valuable service, provides you with time to build rapport with participating parents, and to establish yourself as the educational consultant they can trust.

Newer practices will find College Unraveled workshops to be a great practice-building resource and the source of many new clients. (In our inaugural year of using these workshops, my practice added seventeen new clients directly from the 62 families who participated in the pilot programs.)   College Unraveled also offers well-established practices a way of serving families who might not otherwise seek help.

Purchase allows you to modify the slides to best suit your needs.  The presentation kit includes a copy of the parent manual (notes pages for the parents plus additional resources) and a flash drive with all four PowerPoint presentations and additional resources.
